Shanghai

Queen of the Orient, Shanghai is the biggest city in China. It is said, ‘a city re-learning its past and investing its future’. The major attractions are:

Yu Garden

Covering less than two hectares, Yu Garden combines several different landscapes and architectural elements to create a world in miniature. It has 48 scenic views including over 30 pavilions, many hall ways, bridges, winding paths and beautiful lotus ponds. The garden is divided into six scenic zones with distinct features by five dragon-shaped walls. It is one of the best classical Chinese private gardens in China.

Bund

Modern Shanghai is largely a product of European colonialism, and much of the architecture reflects that heritage. The Bund is part of the Western legacy.

Shanghai Museum

It was built in 1952 and is located in the People’s Square. It is one of the four largest museums in China and contains 120,000 cultural relics that include bronzes, ceramics, paintings, calligraphy and ancient sculptures.

Jade Buddha Temple

It is located in the western part of the city and named after its two exquisite milk-white jade Buddha, which were brought from Burma in the 19th century, it is an active Buddhist temple and attracts a large number of visitors.

Old Town

The Old Town is located to the west of the Bund and Huangpu River and south of Nanjing Road. This area has also been developed with the construction of many new shops and restaurants but they have all been built in the Chinese style; however a small area still exists of the truly ‘old Shanghai’.

Nanjing Road

Nanjing Road is one of the most important commercial and tourist streets in Shanghai, this is a good place to understand the history and culture of Shanghai.
