Shanghai - Yu Garden

Day 1 Shanghai Upon arrival in Shanghai transfer by Maglev Train to the 3-star Wugong Hotel for two nights. Welcome dinner in the evening. (D)

Day 2 Shanghai After breakfast visit the remarkable Shanghai Museum, and walk by the extraordinary Grand Theatre, the latest stunning achievement of Chinese architecture. In the afternoon visit the oldest classical garden in Shanghai, Yuyuan Garden. Stroll along to the Huxing Tea House and the old Chinese Quarter. Enjoy the most famous Buddhist temple in Shanghai, Jade Buddha Temple, and stroll through the Concession area where new trendy bars are housed in the unique Shikumen buildings. Acrobatic Show in the evening. (BLD)

Day 3 Shanghai Beijing Special arrangements have been made for you to learn the traditional Chinese craft, calligraphy. After lunch board the high speed train to Beijing. (G18 1500/1955) Tickets are in first class compartments.  Upon arrival in Beijing transfer to the 3-star Red Wall Hotel for three nights. (BL)

Day 4. Beijing After breakfast visit Tiananmen Square and the magnificent UNESCO site, the Forbidden City which was a home to a succession of Emperors for more than 500 years. Exit through the north gate of the Forbidden City and visit the Jingshan Park for panoramic views of the city. In the afternoon visit the UNESCO site and the Ming dynasty masterpiece, the Temple of Heaven. In the evening enjoy a traditional Beijing Duck Dinner. (BLD)

Day 5 Beijing After breakfast drive to the less-crowded section of the Great Wall of China at Mutiyanu for a gentle hike. After lunch visit another UNESCO site in Beijing, the beautiful Summer Palace, which has the best preserved Imperial Garden. Evening Beijing Opera performance. (BLD)

Day 6 Transfer from the hotel to the airport. (B)

Day 6: Beijing Xian Fly to Xian, China’s first capital and eastern terminus of the Silk Road, for a two-night stay at the 3*Melody Hotel . This afternoon tour Xian’s immense city walls, 60ft wide and 40ft high, complete with towers and battlements, a moat, a hundred ramparts and 18 fortified gates all along its 8 miles – a masterpiece of ancient military engineering.  B/L

Day 7: Xian Visit 7,000 Terracotta Soldiers who’ve stood guard over China’s first emperor for over 2,200 years, and now, painstakingly repaired along with their chariots and horses, they still stand in battle formation in giant exhibition halls erected around the pits where they were discovered in the 1970s. After touring the site, return to the city centre to visit the Muslim Quarter surrounding the imposing Great Mosque. B/L

Day 8: Xian Beijing View some of China’s finest artefacts at the Provincial Museum of its treasures, prehistoric, stone age, bronze age and from every imperial dynasty up to the 19th century, such as neolithic ceramics painted with scenes of everyday life, bronze swords and statues, gold and silver artwork and ancient wall murals. Later, fly to Beijing. B

Day 6: Beijing Chengdu Fly to Chengdu for two nights at the 4*Yinhe Dynasty Hotel .  In a quaint and colourful part of the old town, step back in time as you walk along Kuanzhai Lanes, lined with traditional houses decorated with intricate woodcarving and red lanterns.  B/D

Day 7: Chengdu Visit the Bifengxia Panda Base, one of the foremost research and breedings centres in China. Over 70 pandas live in semi-natural surroundings here, learning how to survive in the wild before they are set free. En-route visit the picturesque town of Shangli with its traditional houses and bridges. Drive back to Chengdu. B/L/D

Day 8: Chengdu Beijing Transfer to the airport for a flight back to Beijing. B

Day 1: Shanghai Hangzhou Upon arrival take a fast train to Hangzhou and transfer to the 3*Lily hotel for two nights.

Day 2: Hangzhou Enjoy a romantic cruise on the scenic West Lake, its banks dotted with temples, pagodas, pavilions and gardens. Visit a traditional pharmacy where you can learn more about Chinese medicine by viewing the exhibits in its museum and the demonstrations in the preparation hall, and also seek advice if you wish in what was considered the best pharmacy of the Qing era and which is certainly one of the finest buildings in Hangzhou. Also visit the extravagant manor house created by the founder of the pharmacy who filled his villa with exquisitely carved furniture and works of art. In the historic old town shop for silk, tea, hand-made fans and scissors.  B/L

Day 3: Hangzhou Shanghai High speed train back to Shanghai and transfer to the 3-star Wugong Hotel.
