Chinese Visas

1. Do I need a visa to travel to China?

All visitors traveling to mainland China, whether for business or leisure, require a visa. No Visa is required prior to enter Hong Kong; a Visa can be issued upon arrival.

2. What types of visas are there? What documents are required?

Listed are the different types, each indicating the supporting documents required:

Visa Type Required Supporting Documents
Tourist Visa
Full Application Form, and one recent passport photograph;
A copy of outward and return flight ticket booking
A copy of Chinese hotel booking
Business Visa
Full Application Form, and one recent passport photograph;
Visa Notification Form (which is issued by the relevant department of Chinese government, companies or institution. Under the authorization of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China. Detailed information can be obtained form the Foreign Affairs Office of the relevant province, autonomous region and municipality where the inviting party resides.) ;
A copy of outward and return flight ticket booking;
A copy of Chinese hotel booking;

Work Visa
Full Application Form, and one recent passport photograph;
An employment permit from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security or the State Administration of Foreign Experts of China;
An invitation letter from a relevant Department of Chinese Government or a government-authorized company;
Student Visa
Full Application Form, & one recent passport photograph;
Form : JW-201 or JW - 02 issued by the Ministry of Education of China
A letter of admission from a Chinese University /College.
Transit Visa
Full Application Form, and one recent passport photograph;
A copy of outward and return flight ticket booking;
A copy of Chinese hotel booking;
A valid visa for the country of destination;
Journalist Visa
Full Application Form, and one recent passport photograph;
A letter from a relevant Department of Chinese government;
A letter from the employer
Travel Itinerary
Permanent Visa
( Living )
A Permit letter from a local government of China .
Travel Itinerary
Tibetan Permit
A full trip itinerary + Visa

3. How to obtain a Chinese Visa?

China Holidays recommends that you obtain your visa before leaving the country where you live. The costs and the length of time to process a visa vary from country to country. Please check the website for the Chinese Embassy in your country to find the information applicable to you. Application forms can usually be downloaded from the web site. 4. What do I need to submit along with my Application Form?

Usually, you have to submit:
Valid Passport
one passport size photograph
Related forms / letters dependant on visa type required
Travel Itinerary provided by your agent

5. How to obtain visa to China in Hong Kong?

You may obtain your visa by yourself from Visa Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China; it is opened from Monday to Friday. Usually you can get the visa within one working day. Fast process is available with a cost.
